Pimp C Died From Overdose, Sleep Condition

An overdose of cough syrup and a sleeping condition resulted in the accidental death of Pimp C, according to the Los Angeles county coroner.
Pimp C, born Chad Butler, suffered from sleep apnea, a disorder that often blocks a person’s airway during sleep, and affects over 12 million people in the U.S.
Early tests also found traces of promethazine and codeine in his system from a prescription cough syrup.
“Sleep apnea, you stop breathing,” said assistant chief coroner Ed Winter.
“Coupled with a medication that suppresses your respiratory abilities, [and] you end up with an accidental death.”
This latest report echoes the deaths of fellow Texas artists DJ Screw in 2000, and Big Moe just last year - both of whom popularized the drinking of codeine-based cough syrup as a recreational drug.
Both died from heart attacks at the ages of 29 and 33 respectively.
Pimp C was found dead in a L.A. hotel room on Dec. 4. He was 33.
Two days after his death, UGK received its first Grammy nomination for the 2007 single, “International Player’s Anthem,” featuring Atlanta duo Outkast.
